Blast from the Past

Have you ever had a "blast from the past"? You know…an experience in which you’re revisiting the past. I had one recently when I went on a job interview.

The position I had applied for appeared in the local newspaper. As is the case with most jobs listed in the paper, only a telephone number was given in order to fax your resume. I went ahead and faxed the resume to the number provided, hoping I would receive a callback.

A few days later, an engineering firm called me. They left me a message informing me they had received my resume and were interested in setting up an interview to consider me for the position. I looked up the address in the phone book and realized the company was not only in the same area of town where I used to work, but their offices were located at the same physical address of where I used to work. I thought…surely this couldn’t be the same offices where I used to work. After all, the building had several suites. The company I previously worked for was no longer in business, so the owners of the property may have rented the offices out to new tenants. The phone book didn’t list a suite number, just the street number of the offices. I thought…what are the chances that someone would end up interviewing for a job which was located in the same offices he/she previously worked?

I returned the call, and spoke with spoke with the person who contacted me about the interview. He gave me information about the job, and asked me if I wanted to come in to talk with him. I agreed, and he began to give me the directions on how to get to their office. I already knew, of course, they were in the same building. He gave me the street address, and then told me they were in suite "A". I couldn’t believe it. It was the same suite where I previously worked. I began to wonder if I was going to start hearing the "Twilight Zone" theme music next. :)

The day of the interview finally arrived, and I was ready. I was excited not only about the interview but getting to see what had happened to my old "stomping grounds". When I arrived, everything pretty much looked the same. The outside of the building looked the same, and even the sign posted on the door specifying the office address was still there.

Coming inside, things, of course, were quite different. I could remember the layout of the reception area and how the entire office had been situated. Where desks and other office furniture had stood, other pieces of office equipment had taken their places. Offices that had been unused and empty when I had been there were filled with employees and desks. It was such an odd feeling seeing everything in a different fashion, almost surrealistic.

The contrast between the outside and the inside of the offices is representative of how Jesus changes us when He comes into our lives. On the outside, we look the same. We have the same physical features. We don’t suddenly appear any different, such as losing all those unwanted pounds we’ve put on or gaining back all the hair we’ve lost over time. On the inside, though, we are quite different. Jesus comes in and changes everything on the inside so much so that we’re never the same as before. He gives us a new heart, new thoughts, and a new direction. God keeps the outside, but changes everything on the inside.

Come to know Jesus today, and experience the "inside changes" He can make in your life! :)

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
