Going the Wrong Way

July 27, 2007 / by passtheword

I haven't been on here for a while to write, but I thought I would share with you all what transpired during my day. You see, I was at my folks' place today trying to help them out with a few chores, and I went to run a few errands for my mother.

My wife and I used to live fairly close to my parents, about a mile or so. I'm pretty accustomed to the area, since I lived there for some 30 years or so. I thought (I stress the word "thought") I knew my way around there.

After my first errand, I had to make another couple of stops. The last leg of my adventure was going to involve me going to Shades Mountain, which is about a mile or so from my parents' house. I had already gone into another part of town, and there was a road we usually take to go up the mountain. Growing up, we used to travel that road all the time, so I knew it inside and out. However, to take that road, I'd have to backtrack an extra mile or so from where I was to get there, so I opted instead to go another route, one in which I had used before, but I had not traveled for several years. I was almost certain it went straight up to the top of the mountain, so there would be no problem. Well...I found out the adventure was just beginning.

Now...there are two main roads that are up on Shades Mountain I know very well (they both basically parallel one another), and one of those roads was where I thought I was going to wind up eventually. Well...I wound up at the top of the mountain and found myself at the other road instead, just a slight bit north of where I needed to be, but I thought...well, I can still go back and find the first road easily and get where I needed to go. At the top of the mountain, there was no outlet and I had to go either left or right. When I lived in the area many years ago, I would always access the road further east than where I was, so I'm trying to get my bearings...I'm thinking...ok...which way am I supposed to turn? I thought it must be to the right, so I turned right. After I drove down that way for a piece, I knew I was going the wrong way. I should have turned left instead. So...I turned around, went back the other direction. I surmised if I go down to the where the road intersects, I could get back on the other main road over there, and get where I needed to go. For some reason, I decided instead to turn back left where I originally turned in from, and I found myself totally lost. I saw some street names that I recognized here and there, but I still couldn't find the main road I needed to take. I thought...this is insane. I've got to go back to the top of the mountain and turn left this time instead of right. Once I turned left, though, nothing looked recognizable for a while. Then I started seeing houses that looked somewhat familiar, but that shouldn't be on that part of the road. To my dismay, I realized I had gone past where I needed to turn off, and I was going down the other side of the mountain. I turned back the other direction, but still nothing looked familiar, so I turned down another side road again, and I saw a sign with an arrow which said "Bluff Park community". I knew this was the subdivision directly behind the business area I needed to get to. I traveled in the direction the sign was indicating and came upon a road I had traveled before, and found my way to the business district. It took me thirty minutes of wandering around to find it, but I did get out. :)

Some people look at eternity and, in particular, how they get to heaven that way. There are many theories out there about how one gets to heaven, but if you're not careful, and you choose the wrong road, you'll wind up being lost eternally. All of what happened to me today could have been averted if I had just gone the way I knew instead of taking an unfamiliar road to save a mile or two on my trip. Choosing the easy way for eternity, too, can be costly. It'll cost you more than you can ever imagine, a terrible place called hell. There's only one way to heaven and His name is Jesus Christ. We all ought to ensure we know ahead of time about eternity. We just can't guess or hope for the best. We have to have proof. That sign today I found really saved me. In the same way, the Bible is our map to guide us into eternity. It has all the correct information we need to know about heaven and how to get there. All the other ways of "getting to heaven" will definitely get you lost...and it'll be forever instead of a thirty minute drive in the suburbs. One of those side roads I took today didn't have an outlet...it just dead-ended. If you wait too long to look at eternity seriously, and where you'll spend it, you could find yourself in a dead-end also, one without an escape and one without remedy. None of us are promised a tomorrow. I hear (and I'm sure you do, too) of people whose lives are abruptly ended for whatever reason. It could be as something simple as a small fall, or as catastophic as a vehicle accident. It happens. Make very sure you know ahead of time about eternity, and be prepared. It's too much of a risk not to be.

Anyhow, that's what happened to me today, and the Lord was sharing all this with me in my car as I was frivously driving around today. I do believe He was trying to teach me in the future not to go down roads I'm unfamiliar with, but on a much grander scale, He was sharing with me about eternity, so I, in turn, could share it with you. So...take heed, be responsible, and do what God expects of you. He loves you, and He doesn't want you to be "left in the dark" about eternity.
