Living Water

October 13, 2007 / by passtheword

It was a warm Saturday afternoon. My wife, kids, and I were on our way to the lake to spend some time just to get away from it all. The kids love to go out and feed the fish and the ducks. Well…Mommy and Daddy do too. :) Little did we know that our planned itinerary for the day was about to have a slight modification.

As we drove closer to our destination, we noticed something was missing. It wasn’t, of course, the masses of people who descend upon the lake every weekend. No…what was missing was far more important. The lake was gone!

It seems that the city had decided to drain the water and clean out all the debris that had been thrown into the lake. As far as the eye could see, all sorts of trash, rocks, and tree limbs decorated the landscape where the lake once had been. The kids were, of course, decidedly unhappy about these turn of events, but we decided we would get out and walk around anyway. After all, we were already there. Maybe we could use the time to teach them about geology! :)

I started thinking about how the bottom of the lake appeared with all the trash, rocks, and the like. I thought…hey, that’s how our spiritual life can get sometimes, too. Barren. When we don’t take time to spend with God, such as reading His word and being involved in an active prayer life, our souls can seem lifeless too. It doesn’t take much to get our minds of God and onto the rest of the world (and all the hassles that come with it). We would hope (at least most of the time, anyway) that our spiritual life would be like the water-filled lake, brimming with life.

After we had walked around for a few minutes, I noticed the outer edge of what used to be the lake. There was a small pond of water left for the ducks and fish. Even though there wasn’t much water out there amidst all the debris, there was enough for the ducks and fish to live in. Jesus is our "water" too when our spiritual life gets rocky and battered from sin. Fortunately, we can always go to the "living water" Jesus gives to restore us back to the fullness of our spiritual life.

So…when life gets "rocky", search for the water that only Jesus can provide!

Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:13)
