My wife and I had to take our two-month old daughter for her scheduled vaccinations this past week. Needless to say, she wasn't too happy. While there, I was looking over some information the nurse gave us about what to expect babies to be doing around two months of age. One of those activities was that babies would begin to cry more when you leave the room. We've noticed that fact with our daughter the last couple of weeks, and we also experienced that with our two other kids. It makes sense, too. Babies don't have the capacity to understand that you're still there when you leave the room. At two months of age, babies cannot fathom the concept that something exists if it's not present in the room with them.
We get to feeling that way too, sometimes, about God when things go awry in life and we're looking for Him. Sometimes, it's our own fault. We let life's issues get in the way with our relationship with Him, and we wind up breaking that connection. We may not "see" Him, but He's still there, nonetheless. He tells us that even when we are faithless, he will remain faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). We can't expect our fellow human beings to be faithful to us at all times, but God will never forsake us.
For those who aren't christians, the same is true. He always remains faithful to those who don't know Him by providing them opportunities to make reconciliation with Him, and, in turn, develop a relationship. There's absolutely nothing we have done which would cause God to turn us away if we're willing to ask for forgiveness and repent of it. You might feel like you've "crossed that threshold" and done far too many bad things that God could ever possibly forgive you, but the good news is God is willing and able to forgive you of all sin. He will not ignore you if you ask for His help. Jesus says is John 6:37 says that "All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.(1 John 1:9, NIV)
...because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."(Hebrews 13:5)
