School Shootings: What is Going On?

April 18, 2007 / by passtheword

It's been a couple of days now since we all heard about the shooting over at Virginia Tech. I've been watching the news to find out what's all been going on with this very tragic event, one which now ranks the worst campus shooting in U.S. history.

The big question remains: Why? Not only for us, but for the young people who went through all of it. How could something like that happen of that magnitude?

We've all been seeing these sort of school shootings happen more frequently as time goes by. Twenty years ago when I was in high school, we hardly ever heard of school shootings. Sure, there were some, but they were few in number. These days, it seems you can't go but a few months, and we hear about another one that's occurred.

The world seems to be getting worse as time goes on, and there's a reason for this proliferation of school shootings. It's a known fact that since God was taken out of schools decades ago that events like these have been on the rise. Just a coincidence? Not really.

It's just the well-known principle of reaping what we sow. Of course, we all understand those concepts in the physical sense. For example, if we choose to plant a particular vegetable in our garden, say, corn, we don't expect potatoes to come up in its place. It just isn't possible, and we all know that. However, this cause and effect we see doesn't just apply to the physical world, it also holds true in the spiritual realm. If we sow those things in the world which are good and true, we will be blessed. If we sow those things which are evil (sin), then we'll also experience the repercussions from those actions.

We're told in the Bible that we're to love God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind. (Luke 10:27) We're supposed to put God first, whether that's in school, work, family, you name it. God tells us that we'll be blessed if we do. Of course, we can choose to do it our own way, and put God second, last, or nowhere in the picture, but if we do so, we're going to reap the consequences. Since we've taken God so much out of school and other facets of life, we're reaping the effects, and it doesn't look good. There's a scripture in Isaiah where God voices his anger with the fact that people want to go their own way and believe they are too "good" for Him to help them:

All day long I have held out my hands
to an obstinate people,
who walk in ways not good,
pursuing their own imaginations-

a people who continually provoke me
to my very face,
offering sacrifices in gardens
and burning incense on altars of brick;

who sit among the graves
and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;
who eat the flesh of pigs,
and whose pots hold broth of unclean meat;

who say, 'Keep away; don't come near me,
for I am too sacred for you!'
Such people are smoke in my nostrils,
a fire that keeps burning all day.

See, it stands written before me:
I will not keep silent but will pay back in full;
I will pay it back into their laps-

both your sins and the sins of your fathers,"
says the LORD.
"Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains
and defied me on the hills,
I will measure into their laps
the full payment for their former deeds."
(Isaiah 65:2-7)

God says, "I made you, and I know what's best for you. I want to help you, and if you give your life to me you'll be blessed.". When we tell God we want to live life without His help, it's the ultimate insult.

The world will never be completely without sin, but we can make changes for the good. If we choose to put God first as He told us, then we'll once again experience the blessings. If we don't, we can expect these types of tragic events to continue to happen, with greater frequency. It's all up to us.

If you don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior, please do so now. He knows what's best for you, and you'll experience the blessings if you'll live for Him. God loves us so much that He sent His one and only son to die for the sins that mankind committed. Why? So we wouldn't have to spend an eternity in hell, and we could live with God eternally in Heaven. Come to Jesus and enjoy the blessings!
